Njinga, a young princess who serves as an astute counselor to her father, Ngola Kilombo Kia Kasenda, is the subject of the first season of African Queens: Njinga. The first episode of the series shows her being politically and militarily groomed while being apprehensive of her brothers’ intentions. She fights the Portuguese invasion by attempting to defend her people, her sisters, and her little son. Together with the country’s first female ruler, it examines the lives of notable and legendary African Queens. The series follows Njinga’s progression from a cherished princess to a fierce leader in her own right across four chapters that are each 45 minutes long[4]. As Njinga works to establish an independent kingdom and gain recognition, tensions are high as she bargains with a European power to defend her own.
